Miss France cinches 2017 Miss Universe title

Miss France, Iris Mittenaere, 24, beat crowd favourite Miss Haiti to be named Miss Universe

In a glittering ceremony last night, Miss France Iris Mittenaere beat 12 other finalists to cinch the 2017 Miss Universe title.

Decked in a glamorous gold sequinned gown, the 24 year old who is a dental surgery student, went on to win the title, beating the second runner-up Miss Haiti and third runner-up Miss Colombia.

The Miss Universe competition changed its format slightly this year as it had 13 finalists instead of the usual 12, and votes were counted from the Miss Universe app and social media network Twitter.

Mittenaere was crowned by the 2016 Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach of Philippines, and will be campaigning for dental and oral care around the world.

The annual pageant was held in Manila, Philippines, and marked the first time that Sierra Leone entered the competition, while Miss Canada Siera Bearchell, took to trolls who body-shamed her for her size.

Steve Harvey also joked on the show that he got this year's winner year, after mixing it up in an awkward moment last year; while entertainment on the show was provided by Flo Rida and Boys II Men.
