Who says that once you get to fifty you have to slip into something beige and boring? Style isn’t about age, it’s about attitude and whatever your shape, size or outlook you need some ideas for great basics you can have in your wardrobe to mix and match for any occasion. If you’re in need of some inspiration, we’ve got it here.
Trousers, Skirts and Jeans
You don’t have to ditch the jeans just because you’re over fifty or hitting retirement! Every woman still needs a really smart pair of tailored denims in her closet to take her through a great variety of occasions from smart to casual.
There are a few ground rules to think about though. Consider one pair of mid-rise, straight cut jeans in a darker shade of denim that can be worked with boots, shoes, wedges or sandals throughout the year. These can be paired with anything from a crisp white shirt to a simple cut v neck t-shirt or sweater for a casual look.
One or two pairs of really well-tailored dress pants in a wool blend can make all the difference to your autumn and winter attire and again can be paired with all manner of tops, from longer tunics to shorter length t-shirts and boleros for a smart/casual appearance.
It’s always worth investing in a good, black pencil skirt too, for more formal occasions. They can be paired with wedges, stilettos or boots and thin denier tights or thicker block coloured tights in winter. A matching jacket or one in a contrasting colour can create a striking balance and give a funky, cutting edge look to your complete outfit.
Jackets and Tops
Solid staples to invest in are a selection of well fitted t-shirts in whites, pastels or neutral shades that can be paired with your jeans or skirts for a simply chic look. But it’s important to think about layers too and whilst a cardigan might make you think about an old lady’s closet, there are some great, hip knits out there in chunky cable wool, or fine gauge tops in solid block colours that add a pop of brightness to any outfit.
Leather jackets are in - but you don’t have to look like an ageing rock chick (unless that’s what you’re aiming for). A really good quality cropped leather jacket in black makes a stunning addition to any closet and it has so many uses. Team it with your dark jeans, and a white shirt for a really cool, edgy look - some chunky beads in a bright shade will really set the whole ensemble off.
