If you’ve followed Kate Hudson’s red carpet style over the years, you know she tends to stick to a certain lane. Clean silhouettes. Soft neutrals. The occasional embellished gown. And yes, that signature butter-yellow she wears so well.

So when she arrived at the 28th Costume Designers Guild Awards on February 12 in deep, saturated purple, it felt like a genuine switch-up.

The 46-year-old actress chose a silk Valentino gown from the brand’s Spring/Summer 2026 “Fireflies” collection, designed by Alessandro Michele. The dress featured a plunging halter neckline with ruched tie detailing that framed her shoulders beautifully before flowing into a sleek, body-skimming silhouette. The silk fabric moved effortlessly as she walked, hugging her frame and then falling into a softly draped skirt that grazed the floor.

The color did most of the talking. It was bold without being loud — rich, romantic, and a refreshing departure from her usual palette.

Hudson kept the styling clean and intentional. Her blonde hair was worn straight and glossy, parted simply and left down to soften the drama of the gown. Her makeup leaned into soft glam: luminous skin, a subtle shimmer on the eyes, warm rosy cheeks, and a plum-toned lip that tied everything together.

She finished the look with a diamond choker that sat neatly at the base of her neck and delicate drop earrings that added just enough sparkle without overpowering the halter detail.

The night was more than just a fashion moment. Hudson was honored with the Spotlight Award for her role in Song Sung Blue, a film based on the true story of Mike and Claire Sardina, who performed as a Neil Diamond tribute duo in the 1980s. She stars opposite Hugh Jackman, with Craig Brewer directing.

All in all, it was a strong showing. A bold color choice, a refined silhouette, and a reminder that when Kate Hudson steps outside her usual style formula, she does it with confidence.

And honestly? Purple might need to make more regular appearances in her wardrobe.
