Long Nail Designs on Cardi B, Rosalía and Kylie Jenner

The first time I got long acrylics, I couldn’t open a can of soda for three days. I tried to text my sister and sent her a message that just said “hgjk.” She still brings it up. But I kept them on for a month anyway, because every time I looked down at my hands I felt about ten times more put together than I actually was.

That’s the thing about long nails. They’re a little impractical, and nobody who loves them cares. Celebrities have been showing them off for decades, and right now the designs are more creative than ever.

Below are the celebrity manicures I keep screenshotting, the shapes that work best for long nails, and a few honest tips from someone who has typed a lot of very bad texts.

Celebrities Who Made Long Nails Famous

Florence Griffith Joyner

Before Instagram nail art was a thing, there was Flo-Jo. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics she won three golds while wearing long, painted nails, some of them decorated in bright patterns, and the world couldn’t stop talking about them. Fast and fabulous. I don’t think anyone has topped it.

Cardi B

Cardi B Long Crystal Nails

You can’t talk about long nails today without Cardi. Her extra-long acrylics, often covered in crystals, are basically part of her brand, and she’s worked with nail artist Jenny Bui for years. When she turned up at the 2024 Oscars with short nails, it was such a surprise that it made headlines.

Rosalía

Rosalía Long Nail Art

Rosalía’s nails are tiny pieces of art. Think long, pointed shapes covered in chrome, charms, tiny pearls and 3D details. Her Motomami era in particular gave us some of the most copied manicures of the decade.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner Long Nude Nails

If you’ve ever asked for a long coffin or almond shape in a soft nude or milky white, you may well have Kylie to thank. Her nails are usually clean and polished rather than wild, which makes them much easier to copy.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish Long Acrylic Nails

In her early days Billie had long, colorful acrylics that matched her neon green roots and baggy clothes. Lime green stilettos, plaid square tips, glossy black with tiny crystals, she wore them all, and plenty of fans copied the whole thing.

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan likes her nails long, glossy and fun, from bright solid colors to sparkly designs that match her stage outfits. Hers always look like they’re in on the joke.

Best Shapes for Long Nails

Coffin, also called ballerina, is long and tapered with a flat, squared-off tip. It’s probably the most popular long shape right now and looks great with ombré or French tips.

Stiletto is the dramatic one. Long and pointed, a bit witchy, and gorgeous in black or deep red. If you love the gothic aesthetic, this is your shape.

Almond is softer, with a rounded point. It makes your fingers look slimmer and is a little less likely to snag on your sweaters.

And square is the classic acrylic shape from the early 2000s, still going strong, especially with a long French tip.

Long Nail Designs to Try

The Long French Tip

Long French Tip Nails

A classic white tip, just longer. It looks clean and elegant, and you can make it more modern with a skinny tip, a colored tip, or a slanted “deep French” line.

Milky White and Soft Nude

Simple, expensive-looking and good with literally everything. A milky white coffin nail is one of the most requested looks in salons, and it goes perfectly with a soft girl wardrobe.

Chrome

That mirror-like finish you’ve seen everywhere. Silver chrome on long almond nails looks very futuristic, while a pearly “glazed” chrome over a nude base is subtler.

Crystals and 3D Charms

The Cardi B approach. Rhinestones, gems, little bows and charms. It’s a lot, which is exactly the point. Save it for a special occasion unless you really don’t plan on doing anything with your hands.

Ombré

Two colors fading into each other, usually pink to white, or nude to a brighter shade. It looks especially good on long nails because there’s more room for the fade.

Y2K Designs

Flames, butterflies, little stars, airbrushed hearts. This is very early-2000s and it’s completely back. It goes with chunky highlights and claw clips, and if you want the full look, our post on Y2K hairstyles is a fun place to start.

Red Stilettos

Sometimes classic just wins. A long, glossy red stiletto is about as glamorous as nails get.

Cat Eye

Magnetic polish that creates a little shimmering line of light across the nail, like a cat’s eye. It moves when you move your hand, and on a long nail it looks amazing.

Tips for Living With Long Nails

Pick the right base. Acrylics are strong and great for very long lengths, while soft gel extensions are lighter and can feel more natural. Ask your nail tech what suits your nails.

Start shorter than you think. Going from nothing to stiletto claws overnight is how you end up sending texts like mine. A medium length gives you a few days to adjust.

Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails, for typing and buttons. It sounds obvious but it takes practice.

Moisturize your cuticles. A little cuticle oil every night keeps everything looking fresh and helps your natural nails underneath stay healthy.

And give your nails a break now and then. Long extensions every week for a year can leave your natural nails thin and weak.

Final Thoughts

Long nails aren’t the most practical choice, but they’re one of the most fun. Whether you go full Cardi B crystals or a quiet milky white coffin, they make your whole look feel a bit more finished.

Just maybe practice texting before you leave the salon. Trust me.
