Winter Hair Care Tips

Winter calls for special hair care as it gets exposed to harsh low temperatures and dry air. Hot water baths, heating systems and caps add to the existing problems. It dries the scalp causing it to flake, dandruff, split ends and in turn leads to dreaded hair fall. Including simple DIY tips and avoiding certain regular hair care routines which were perfect for other seasons will help in enjoying this festive season without worrying about hair problems.

  • Oil massage is a simple at home remedy for winter hair problems. Olive oil is the best choice for giving a glossy look to hair while ensuring that it is not brittle and dry. Take warm oil into your palms and gently apply it on the scalp and massage for few minutes.

  • Hot water baths are common during winter; however it is crucial to keep temperature at the lowest possible limit as extreme temperatures could severely damage hair follicles and also make them easily breakable and fragile.

  • Do not shampoo hair frequently but limit hair washes to two or three times a week. Repeated hair washes rip hair off of its natural oil balance, and winter low temperatures make it worse by making it brittle and frizzy. Chemicals in over the counter shampoos can harm as well. Hence it is important to choose a mild shampoo while keeping a tab on the number of washes.

  • More than shampoos, winter calls for investing time and money on getting a good conditioner to moisturize hair after each and every wash. A handful of conditioner applied on full hair, while avoiding roots, and washing it off thoroughly, keeps the hair in maintainable and smooth condition. Natural moisturizer like milk works best for giving an instant shine and not add chemicals to the scalp. Adding a cup of milk to the last hair rinse works wonders.

  • Hair mask with egg white and olive oil makes the best solution for delicate and frizzy hair. Apply it on the scalp and hair root to tip and leave it for about 30 minutes before washing it off. It is advisable not to use shampoo at least for a day.

  • Apply pulp of fruits such as banana and papaya with milk or honey to fight winter dryness.

  • Curd is an excellent conditioner and eases from dandruff within one wash. Unlike over the counter conditioners, it can be used on a daily basis to restore natural lustre and makes tresses silky smooth and soft to touch. Either apply it directly onto the hair or mix it with other hair masks for good results.

  • Cover hair with a good cap preferably woolen or knit ones so that it stops direct exposure to harsh cold weather and at the same time allow some amount of airflow to avoid further damage.

  • Go for natural products as opposed to chemical ones to help minimize further problems and side effects.
Winter is here and these simple changes to everyday routine will help in keeping those lovely locks stay healthy and bouncy at all times.
