Discover the top beauty trends from 2009-2019. A look back at the hairstyles, makeup, and fashion statements that defined the decade.
The fashion and beauty industry saw a major change in the past decade. Beauty trends became popular, some faded away while some are still going strong. From funky hair and makeup looks to subtle and more natural makeup taking the limelight in the latter years, with social media highly influencing the trends, this decade was a major twist and turn in terms of trends that came and stayed.
Before this decade things were simple, and people knew of terms such as voluminous curls or glittery eyes, but the 2009-2019 era paved way for the Mommy Makeover, microblading, baking and highlighting, and even Keeping Up With The Kardashians' youngest star Kylie Jenner became a billionaire at 22 thanks to her Lip Kit innovation.
There were revivals and renovations, and past trends were introduced once again, and the end of the decade has already introduced and reintroduced some trends that show the potential of being the biggest trend-setters in the next decade. While people became huge on eye makeup, blunt bobs and skin care are closing the decade as the next big thing. Here's a look at the beauty trends of the decade that ruled the charts:
2009 - Moody Punk Eyeliner
Going emo glam became the thing at the end of the last decade, and we saw it both on runways and the red carpet. Thick, grunge inspired eyeliner paved the way for intense moody eyes and more and more brands came up with kohl-eyeliners and the blackest of black pencils that no one dared to walk out the house without.2010 - The Messy Bun
While going prim and proper with very elegant hairdos was the thing of the past, the messy bun rose to prominence in 2010. The classic chignon got a flirty twist and was spotted everywhere from brunches to high-profile events. No-fuss and product free, the messy bun became the ultimate hairdo, and even gave a low-profile glam statement while being entirely cool and trendy.2011- Bold Lips
Previous years saw women sticking to safe colors or the signature red for their lips, but in 2011 we saw a major change in this regard. Women stopped shying away from bold and bright hues, and went the dazzling way with deeper, more intense shades. While coral lips with coral blush was one of the trends of the year, we also saw lip colors going from purple to oxblood and even shimmery and metallic.2012 - Sultry Smoky Eyes
The biggest trend of the decade was perhaps smoky eyes and it became all the hype which is still going strong. With makeup brands churning out smoky eye palettes, makeup artists and influencers started playing around with sultry and smoldering hues to give the perfect smokiness. Not just black, smoky eyes also were in neutral earthy tones and for a more bling look, shimmery bling smoky eyes came into trend too.2013 - Nail Art
2013 saw the trend of fancier nail arts and solid colors and the French manicure took a break. Models and celebrities were spotted with the most glamorous of manicures, and the trend first started with crackled effect polishes then moved on to more glitzy and chic designs. Now we see more and more of décor on the nails too, and each holiday gets its own glam version of nail art be it Halloween nail art, Thanksgiving or Christmas.2014 - Caking
The decade also saw the rise of the Kardashians, and one thing Kim Kardashian made popular was caking or baking. Kim's caking technique involved using a light powder and letting it sit on the face for a while before brushing it off. Caking ensures long coverage and giving a smooth poreless finish which the Reality TV mogul is known for.2015 - Kylie Jenner's Lip Challenge
With the rise in social media, we also saw a number of beauty trends and challenges taking popularity. Unicorn makeup was one such thing, but 2015 highly became popular for Kylie Jenner's Lip Challenge. The Reality TV star began to be seen with plump and luscious lips, and was rumored to be have taken lip fillers which at first she denied, and more and more people began to use vacuum suction to create fuller lips. The trend later faded out when Kylie finally admitted to have used lip injections, but the star launched her Lip Kit by Kylie Cosmetics.2016 - Glossy Eyelids
This is also the trend that took the rise from social media. Sexy, sultry wet-look lids became all the hype and brands started coming out with liquid eyes shadows and glosses. At home hacks included rubbing vaseline over your eyelids or mixing lip balm with any eyeshadows, while the most common ways to get the runway ready glossy lids was to apply liquid eyeshadow.2017 - Bold Brows
207 became the year for brows. Instagram trends for brows took quite the leap and other than the naturally big and bold brows we also saw feather brows, peacock brows and even braided brows! Squiggly brows and negative space brows were also seen, but thankfully, these weird trends did not stay for long, however, people continued to flaunt and rock Cara Delevingne inspired full brows.2018 - Glass Hair
One major celebrity trend that was followed by all in 2018 was glass hair. Made popular by Kim Kardashian among others, glass hair was a super sleek blunt bob treated to give the most glamorous and blinding of shines. The end result was a flawless and futuristic style, and enhanced the facial features perfectly. The only downside was that you would have to redo it all over upon washing your hair.2019 - Skincare rules!
With people becoming more and more health and beauty conscious, 2019 saw a major rise in skincare. Sheet masks became a staple, and naturally flawless and glowing skin was much more sought after than any other beauty look. Glass skin and Korean skincare became popular all over the world, and K-beauty products saw the rise and demand in the USA as well. Serums, facial oils, well-hydrated and supple skin became popular than any other look, and people became quite aware of staying away from products that harm and damage the skin.2020 - Adult Orthodontics
Straight teeth have always been fashionable. Braces, not so much. 2020 was something of a breakout year for adult orthodontics. More and more young adults are opting for braces or Invisalign well beyond their teen years. And several popular direct-to-consumer aligner companies, such as SmileDirectClub, are jumping on this trend by offering a convenient and affordable alternative to Invisalign. Some even offer a nighttime aligner treatment option, which gives you the flexibility of just wearing your aligners 10 hours per day while you sleep.
