Clean Hands

The most important step is to use clean hands only on a fresh tattoo. This is a very common advice given by all tattoo artists. Dirty and untidy hands carry many germs, and if the tattoo is touched by those, an infection can be caused. Always wash your hands with an antibacterial soap for twenty seconds or more, pat dry, then proceed to touch your new tattoo if needed, and even when taking off the bandages.

Cleanse the Tattoo with Antibacterial Soap

Most tattoo artists suggest to take off the original bandage on the tattoo within two-three hours. It is important that you do not rebandage the tattoo and wash the area only with antibacterial soap and not any kind of harsh exfoliant or scrub. Use only warm to mild water and do not use any kind of cloth on a new tattoo as that it a risk for infections.

Use an Ointment

Many tattoo artists will recommend an ointment to keep the tattoo hydrated and moist. A thin layer is just enough or any more will end up clogging your pores and suffocating your skin, ending up in a rash. Some tattoo artists may even suggest not to use any kind of ointment and just let the skin breathe after the first wash. It is crucial that you follow all steps suggested by your tattoo artist.

Let the Tattoo Breathe

Another important and essential step is to just let the new tattoo breathe. Regardless if you have a fine line tattoo or a trash polka tattoo, avoiding wearing tight and fitted clothing as ventilation is necessary.. If you are applying an ointment, it should be kept in mind not to wear any snug clothing on top of it, and just let your skin breathe and heal on its own.

  • Showers and baths are fine as long as you do not immerse your body in water. Swimming should also be avoided for a couple of days after getting a tattoo.
