July marked the 10th anniversary of Alta Moda, the haute couture extravaganza hosted by Dolce & Gabbana. The Sicilian designers paid tribute to the legacy of Siracusa. The historic city was a breathtaking backdrop for a series of fashion events, performers, artists, chefs, and celebrities.
Dolce & Gabbana Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of Alta Moda
The guests feasted on old-world luxuries and dressed in a surreal array of ball gowns, jewel-encrusted vests, layered silks, and fashions inspired by the Sicilian town hosting the events. Mediterranean traditions and rich coastal histories were all inspirations for the decor and festivities, according to Dolce & Gabbana. The designers dramatically entered as an extension of the show, closely flanking Mariah Carey and evoking the image of angels upon her shoulders.
Jewelry Presentation
The extended event started with unveiling a jewelry collection at the La Grotta dei Cordari. This quarry provided the distinctive limestone that gives Syracuse its color. The dazzling pieces matched the city, the glittering designs worn by guests and models, and the decor all over the town.
Opera
The next event was across an old wooden bridge adorned with banners at the Cathedral of Syracuse. The ancient structure and courtyard were the stage for a re-enactment of Cavalleria Rusticana, a classic Italian opera. The legend of love and betrayal, revenge, and salvation provided the artistic framework of heritage for the crescendo of fashion and music.
Fashion Show
The first, more contemporary Sicilian designs quickly evolved once tragedy and hope became elements. Faith arrives as a modern fashion take on a festival of Immaculate Conception. The mix of decadence and timeless forces then literally descends a grand stair as an angel character. These heavenly images usher in more abstract and emotional looks. The character designs quickly iterated to demonstrate their growth through love, loss, and voice. By the end, the entire moving collection is arrayed in a sublime pose before the guests, transforming the whole location into one massive art piece of interconnected scenes and themes.
The Looks
The avante-garde angel fashions were the pinnacle of the collection of 106 outfits. The pieces, seemingly formed from living rock, were adorned with cherubs. There were angelic wings and elaborate shimmering gowns. The otherworldly designs fit in with the sublime setting and elite guests.
