Blumarine Spring/Summer 2023 Milan Fashion Week Runway
Revive Y2K vibes with Blumarine's SS2023: a bold mix of denim, corsets, and iconography that pays homage to 90s glam with a daring twist.
Italian fashion brand Blumarine, founded in 1977, is known to stick strongly to its roots, and for the Spring/Summer 2023 Milan Fashion Week Show, the brand's ethos, largely associated with the Y2K era, was visibly seen. With a utilitarian twist, the collection substituted floral miniskirts and lacy crop tops for ubiquitous cargos, flared denim bell-bottoms and plenty of religious iconography. Creative director Nicola Brognano, who told Vogue last season that "[his] Blumarine is more dirty, bitchy, sexier," went bold and vivacious as his models sashayed down the ramp in low-rise, acid-wash denim jeans, paired with sheer tops, body-hugging corsets and even shredded denim cowl-neck tops. The runway paid ode to the "The Simple Life"-era of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, and along with that, included more feminine and flirty styles that remain true to Blumarine's signature style, but with a messier twist. The runway saw elegant layered silk dresses that had tatters of ribbons trailing behind, giving a vibe of being shredded off the dress. Blumarine's well-known butterfly motif was ditched in favor of a Christian cross; and is seen all over denim, made into ornaments or worn as a skimpy top itself. The collection speaks of a flashy glamor, but with a rough and messy edge, and takes us back to the celebrity fashion of the 90s, to the wardrobe of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
