French high-end fashion brand Louis Vuitton put together its Menswear Fall/Winter 2023 Collection which was showcased at the ongoing Pairs Fashion Week. KidSuper founder Colm Dillane was enlisted as the first to co-design an offering following Abloh’s passing. The show was opened with Rosalía crooning to a number of electric Brazilian songs, instantly setting the vibe of the event. Rather than showcasing on a traditional runway, the mélange of clothing was seen in a domestic sphere as the runway had been designed to mimic rooms in a home. The fashion show put on a coming of age narrative, and the models moved through a hospital room, hinting a the beginning of life, then progressing to a child and teenager’s safe spaces.
The Louis Vuitton Menswear Collection offered blazers which were fastened with a single large button or had extravagantly draped waists, and highly exaggerated shoulders and dramatic, split hemlines. A rainbow of spray painted apples made an otherwise simple austere concrete gray coat full of life. Playful and cheeky energy was visible throughout the collection, and teddy bear-textured outerwear was seen on the models alongside puffer jackets embroidered with patchwork illustrations, bringing to life an adolescent day dream.
Louis Vuitton’s FW23 was a master class on sartorial juxtaposition, and balanced the label’s refined elegance with Dillane’s eccentric aesthetic. Matrix-style sunglasses were also sported by the models, and suits were made interesting with screen printing onto oversized two-piece sets. Gloves accent structured vests, and leather hats presented as accessories also seemed to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with the floppy tails, and overall the collection delivered the message of being young and happy-spirited, and to never grow up.
