On May 6, 2023, the coronation ceremony for King Charles III took place at Westminster Abbey in London, England. Prince Harry, who had returned to the UK for the event, was seen arriving solo, without his wife, Meghan Markle. He walked alongside his cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and was seated in the third row for the formal ceremony.
Earlier in April, the king's communications team had confirmed that Prince Harry would attend the coronation service but Meghan Markle would remain in California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. People close to the situation indicated that Prince Harry had decided to attend the event to support his father's important milestone, but he was not expected to appear at other events besides the crowning ceremony.
The announcement of Prince Harry's attendance came a few weeks after a spokesperson for the Sussexes revealed that Harry had recently received email correspondence from His Majesty's office regarding the coronation. At the time, it was not clear whether or not Harry and Meghan Markle would accept the invitation.
The coronation ceremony, which was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, also included the crowning of Queen Consort Camilla alongside her husband, King Charles III. Buckingham Palace had previously announced the coronation on October 11, 2022, stating that it would reflect the monarch's role in contemporary society while also being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.
Interestingly, the date of the coronation ceremony coincided with Prince Archie's fourth birthday. Although the young royal was not in attendance, it added an extra layer of significance to the event for the Sussex family.
