Prabal Gurung's Spring 2024 Ready-to-Wear Collection brings Power Shoulders back

In recent years, Prabal Gurung, renowned for his socially conscious designs, has used his fashion shows as stages for political advocacy. However, this season marked a reversal of that dynamic as Gurung brought the focus back to his personal identity and roots. The presentation was held outdoors at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park on Roosevelt Island, a location which holds deep personal significance for the designer.

In 2018, Gurung had participated in a "Freedom From Fear" light installation in support of gun control at this very park. Inspired by President Roosevelt's fundamental human rights—freedom of speech, worship, want, and fear—Gurung aimed to celebrate the multicultural spirit of America and the fusion of Western and Eastern influences. Born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, he worked in New Delhi before immigrating to New York, carrying with him a sense of "rootlessness" and "unbelonging."

A recent visit to India rekindled his connection to his heritage, stirring up fond memories and inspiring elements of his collection. Patterns in the garments drew from his grandmother's wallpaper, and the overall aesthetic was influenced by traditional Nepali and Indian clothing. Gurung expressed a desire for "the West to meet the East" in the fashion world, observing a shift in international power dynamics.

The collection showcased bold power shoulders, gathered waists, and tapered silhouettes, drawing inspiration from '80s Escada, '80s Bollywood, and Bill Blass. Gurung reminisced about his time at these fashion houses and his aunts' saris paired with broad-shouldered jackets. This personal connection materialized in amber drop jewelry and oversized earrings featured in the show.

The casting also reflected familial connections, with models like Anne Vyalitsyna and Tasha Tilberg embodying the collection's warrior woman and traditional Rajasthani influences, respectively.

The collection introduced a refreshing ease and more separates compared to previous seasons. Draped pants, corsets layered over chiffon panels, and beautifully pleated pieces were highlights. Notably, Gurung experimented with humble fabrics like denim and linen, allowing for new shapes and textures while retaining the designer's signature sense of dress-up glamour in a modern context.

Despite facing a bit of rain during the show, Gurung remained undaunted. In the end, the outdoor setting seemed to water his creative soul. The designer acknowledged the support of his models and the collaborative spirit of the fashion world, emphasizing that no one is truly an island unto themselves.
