Chanel Pre-Fall 2024 Collection

Chanel, rooted in Paris, showcases its globally inspired and widely accessible runway shows. Periodically venturing beyond Paris, particularly for pre-collections, the luxury brand recently brought its Métiers d'art production to Manchester. Known as the world's first industrialized city and a historic hub for influential rock bands, Manchester was described by Chanel as an "effervescent capital of pop culture."

Influenced by the city's vibrant music scene, founder Coco Chanel's ties to nearby Cheshire, and teased through concert poster-inspired graphics and a Sofia Coppola-directed film set to New Order's "Blue Monday," the collection was anticipated to reflect Manchester's musical legacy.

Presented through a photoshoot directed by Coppola and featuring young locals modeling the pieces, the collection showcased a blend of nostalgia from Manchester's musical heydays—drawing inspiration from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Saturated colors, boxy silhouettes, and fine fabrications from Chanel's specialty ateliers captured the essence of those decades, with a departure from the brand's typically darker palette.

The runway show, held on a closed street with a glass roof to protect guests from the rain, revealed a collection less literal in its interpretation, focusing on rich textures that mirrored the nuances of the metropolis. Accessories like newsboy caps, thigh-high socks, scarves, and beanies, alongside direct nods to rock-and-roll aesthetics, added a distinctive touch.

Noteworthy attendees included Chanel ambassadors Sofia Coppola, Kristen Stewart, and Caroline de Maigret, alongside local music figures Gene and Lennon Gallagher, rapper Aitch, R&B singer Victoria Jane, and Karen Elson, who closed the show and was born just outside the city. Overall, the Métiers d'art collection celebrated Manchester's rich music history with a blend of Chanel's timeless elegance and the city's cultural vibrancy.
