Michelle Keegan's 'Fool Me Once' Confessions: From On-Set Laughter to Global Success

Michelle Keegan has spilled the beans on the 'embarrassing' moments she experienced while filming her latest Netflix thriller, "Fool Me Once," alongside co-star Dame Joanna Lumley. The Coronation Street star, 36, shared the behind-the-scenes anecdotes during a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, set to air on Friday night.

In the series, Michelle plays Maya Stern, an ex-army captain trying to unravel the mystery of seeing her murdered husband, Joe (Richard Armitage), on a secret nanny cam, while Dame Joanna Lumley portrays her mother-in-law, Judith Burkett.

Michelle expressed the joy of working with BAFTA-winning star Joanna, saying, 'It was so much fun, and we laughed the whole way through.' However, she confessed to feeling 'embarrassed' during rehearsals due to the show's use of strong language. Michelle revealed, 'There were a lot of F-bombs dropped in the show, but I just couldn't bring myself to swear at her in rehearsal. I was just so embarrassed to say the word.'

"Fool Me Once" has quickly climbed to the top of Netflix's charts since its New Year's Day release, surprising Michelle with its global success. She remarked, 'It’s madness that it’s number one all over the world. I was always a huge fan of Harlan Coben books so when I got the call it was "Yes, absolutely," and I grabbed it with both hands.'

The gritty thriller marks a departure from Michelle's role in Coronation Street, which she described as 'a massive learning platform.' Reflecting on leaving the long-running soap opera, she shared, 'I took a long, long time to decide to leave – it was very hard. And then when they told me they were killing off my character and there was no going back, I thought I would never work again. My security was ripped away which made me push forward and work harder.'

Discussing her future acting plans on This Morning, Michelle hinted at her desire to play a darker role, stating, 'Maybe I would like to play a darker role next, all my characters are quite likeable.'

As for "Fool Me Once," Michelle revealed her initial reaction to the gripping story, saying, 'I read the book before and I could not put it down. I literally read the book in two days. I got to the part where there is this huge twist, and I let out such a loud gasp everyone turned around and looked.'

Michelle's husband, Mark Wright, took to Instagram to express his pride, calling her a 'superstar' and urging viewers to binge-watch the series on Netflix.
