Fairycore Aesthetic: What It Is and How to Wear It
Flower crowns, lace and floaty dresses. Here's what the fairycore aesthetic is, the celebrities who wear it, and easy fairycore outfits to try now.
If you've ever wanted to dress like you live in a mossy forest and talk to butterflies, congratulations. There's a name for that. It's fairycore, and it's been quietly taking over TikTok and Pinterest for a few years now.
Think lace, tulle, flower crowns and dresses that float when you walk. It's soft, a little bit silly, and honestly very pretty.
What Is Fairycore?
Fairycore (or fairy core, people spell it both ways) is a style inspired by fairytales, folklore and nature. The colors are gentle. Sage green, dusty pink, lilac, cream and the odd bit of gold.
The details do most of the work. Puff sleeves, ruffles, corset tops, embroidered flowers, butterfly clips and anything that looks like it was picked from a garden. Some people go full fantasy with wings and glitter. Others just add a lace top to their jeans and call it a day. Both count.
Fairycore vs Cottagecore
They get mixed up all the time, and fair enough, they're cousins. Cottagecore is about the cozy farmhouse life. Baking bread, gingham dresses, chickens in the garden.
Fairycore takes that and adds magic. It's less "grandma's kitchen" and more "I just walked out of an enchanted wood". Expect more sparkle, more sheer fabrics and a lot more flowers in the hair.
It also sits close to boho and coquette, which is why you'll often see the three mixed together. We've covered how they all compare in our guide to the different types of aesthetics.
Celebrities Who Wear the Fairy Aesthetic
Florence Welch has basically been fairycore since before it had a name. Floaty gowns, long sleeves, flower crowns, the lot. She performs like she's casting a spell, and she dresses like it too.
Vanessa Hudgens made flower crowns a Coachella staple in the 2010s, and that festival look is still one of the easiest ways into fairycore.
And who could forget Zendaya at the 2019 Met Gala? She went full Cinderella in a Tommy Hilfiger gown that lit up on the carpet. It's about as fairytale as fashion gets.
Fairycore Outfit Ideas
You don't need a whole new wardrobe. Start with one piece and build around it.
A white or pastel midi dress with puff sleeves is the easiest win. Add a cardigan if it's cold, and some ballet flats or lace-up boots.
For everyday, try a lace or ruffled blouse with a flowy skirt. Throw in a pearl hairclip or a ribbon and you're done.
Corset tops are big right now too. Wear one over a sheer shirt with wide-leg trousers and it looks fairycore without screaming costume.
And accessories really carry the look. Flower crowns, butterfly clips, mushroom or moon jewelry, a little crochet bag. Thrift and vintage stores are full of this stuff, so you don't have to spend much.
Fairycore Beyond Clothes
For a lot of fans it goes way past clothes. Fairy lights over the bed, dried flowers in jars, a few crystals on the windowsill, a stack of old books.
The makeup is soft and dewy, with a bit of shimmer on the cheeks and maybe a few faux freckles. Hair is usually loose and wavy, braided, or full of tiny clips.
Why Is Everyone Into Fairycore?
Part of it is pure escapism. The world can feel a lot, and dressing like a woodland fairy is a nice break from it. It blew up during lockdown for exactly that reason, when people were stuck at home and dreaming of being outdoors.
It's also just fun. There aren't many rules, it's very creative, and it works for pretty much any budget.
