My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel in Works with Oscar-Nominated ‘Past Lives’ Writer
Sony is developing a ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel with Oscar-nominated ‘Past Lives’ writer Celine Song—but will the original cast return?
A ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel Is Happening—With a Stellar Writer Attached
Get ready for another round of runaway brides and romantic chaos—My Best Friend’s Wedding is officially getting a sequel. Sony has tapped Past Lives writer (and Oscar nominee) Celine Song to pen the follow-up to the beloved 1997 rom-com, which starred Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, and Dermot Mulroney.
While the project is still in early development—no director or casting details have been confirmed—Song’s involvement is a major win. Known for her emotionally rich storytelling, she earned critical acclaim for Past Lives, her semi-autobiographical drama about childhood sweethearts reuniting after decades. Her latest film, Materialists (starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal), further proved her knack for sharp, heartfelt romantic stories.
The big question? Whether the original cast will return. Mulroney recently played coy, telling the New York Post, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.” But with Song’s talent for blending humor and heartbreak, this sequel might just live up to the iconic original.
Could we see Julianne (Roberts) and Michael (Mulroney) back for more wedding-day drama? Here’s hoping—because if anyone can revive this rom-com magic, it’s Song.
