Kate Winslet Recalls Accidental Royal Encounter in a Sheer Lace Catsuit
Kate Winslet hilariously recalls meeting King Charles for the first time while wearing a sheer lace catsuit at a 1996 royal premiere.
Kate Winslet has worn plenty of unforgettable looks throughout her career, but even she admits one outfit choice still makes her blush. During her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Oscar winner shared a hilarious story about the first time she met King Charles III. As it turns out, her introduction to the royal family happened while she was wearing one of her boldest outfits ever.
Winslet explained that the meeting took place in 1996 at the royal premiere of Sense and Sensibility, long before she became an ambassador for the King’s Foundation. She was only 20 at the time and had not fully realized she would be face-to-face with the then-Prince of Wales. It wasn’t until he was walking toward her that she remembered what she had chosen to wear.
The outfit was a black lace catsuit made with a sheer paisley pattern that showed almost everything. It was layered over matching boy shorts, but the look still left very little to the imagination. Winslet joked that panic hit her instantly. “He’s getting closer, and all I can think is, ‘Nipples, nipples, nipples… oh no!’” she told Kimmel, laughing. Thankfully, someone nearby signaled for her coat, and she quickly pulled it around herself before greeting the royal.
Her quick thinking paid off, and Charles didn’t seem fazed in the slightest. In fact, nearly three decades later, he appointed Winslet as part of his King’s Foundation, joining notable figures like Meryl Streep and David Beckham.
Winslet also shared a sweet moment about coaching Streep on royal etiquette before a recent event. As the two walked toward the king, Streep asked whether they needed to curtsy. Winslet assured her they did, though neither was entirely certain how deep the curtsy should be. “There was a real panic because we didn’t know the proper form,” she admitted. The two ultimately followed protocol, and the meeting went smoothly.
The story may be decades old, but Winslet’s candid retelling proves that even global stars have wardrobe moments they never forget.
