Chappell Roan at Grammys 2026 wearing sheer burgundy Mugler gown

Chappell Roan does not do subtle, and her 2026 Grammys appearance proved exactly that. Wearing a daring sheer burgundy Mugler look that played with illusion and exposure, the singer delivered one of the most talked about beauty moments of the night without anyone realizing how much work went into it.

At first glance, the outfit looked fearless and barely there. But behind the scenes, her makeup artist Sasha Glasser was quietly engineering one of the most unexpected tricks on the carpet.

Speaking to Allure, Glasser shared that the goal was actually to make Roan feel less exposed, not more. The solution started with prosthetic nipple covers from Out of Kit. These were not standard pieces. They came with a sticky backing, similar to a bandage, meaning they did not require heavy glue to stay in place.

To make sure everything stayed secure through the night, Glasser added Telesis, a medical grade prosthetic adhesive, and reinforced the pieces with small circles of power mesh. Then came the part nobody saw coming. She pierced an earring through both the prosthetic and the mesh to create the illusion of nipple jewelry without Roan having any actual piercings.

Because the prosthetics needed to blend seamlessly with Roan’s skin, the team painted them directly on her body. And to keep the jewelry clean while working, they temporarily covered it with bubblegum wrappers before removing them just in time to slip her into the sheer Mugler dress.

The result on camera looked bold, edgy, and completely effortless. In reality, it was a carefully constructed beauty illusion designed to give Roan confidence inside an outfit that could have easily felt too revealing.

The drama did not stop at the outfit. Roan also debuted a striking hair transformation for the Grammys, trading her signature auburn curls for a deep brunette shade. The darker tone added intensity to the overall look and worked perfectly with the rich burgundy of the dress.

Fans had already seen a preview of the new hair color back in November during the Grammy nominee livestream, where she appeared in a sleeveless graphic top and colorful glam featuring gold, blue, and green eyeshadow. But on the Grammy carpet, the full vision came together. Dark hair, sheer Mugler, and a beauty trick that no one could have guessed.

It is exactly the kind of behind the scenes detail that makes a red carpet moment even more iconic after the fact.
