Dakota Johnson Wears Custom Calvin Klein Sequin Gown and Messika Diamonds to Present Taylor Swift at the 2026 VMAs

Dakota Johnson turned up at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards as a surprise guest, and she chose a much quieter look than anyone expected. The actress, known for Fifty Shades of Grey, Materialists and her upcoming thriller Verity, appeared at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27 to present her close friend Taylor Swift with the show's inaugural Artist Director Honors.

Johnson wore a custom Calvin Klein Collection gown by creative director Veronica Leoni, styled by Kate Young. The blush, iridescent sequin-embroidered column had a square neckline, thin straps and an open back, then skimmed her body down to a floor-length hem with a small side slit. The sequins were sewn in long vertical rows, so the whole dress moved like liquid under the stage lights. After her two sheer looks in London for the Verity press tour, this was a pretty big change of pace.

The jewelry stayed minimal. She wore a Messika collar necklace paved entirely in tiny diamonds, with a single emerald-cut stone hanging from the center, plus a few slim rings. Pale strappy sandals with a gold chain ankle strap kept the palette soft, and her red manicure and pedicure gave the look its one pop of color. She wore her long dark hair down and straight with her signature curtain bangs, with soft, rosy makeup to match.

Johnson also sat next to Swift in the audience, who wore Tamara Ralph, and the two friends shared the stage again to introduce the world premiere of Swift's "Patient Zero" music video. Johnson stars in the clip alongside Colin Farrell. She has said she loves working with close friends because of the trust and mutual respect between them. Verity, also starring Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, hits theaters this Friday.
