Sabrina Carpenter Channels Madonna in Her Retro Performance Outfit at the 2026 VMAs

Sabrina Carpenter skipped the 2026 MTV VMAs red carpet, but she certainly didn't skip the fashion moment. The pop star made her entrance onstage alongside Madonna, performing their collaboration “Bring Your Love” as part of the show's opening act on September 27 at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater.

For the performance, Carpenter went for a playful Madonna-inspired look that felt equal parts cheeky, glamorous and retro. She wore an oversized white button-down shirt, left open enough to reveal a black lace bra underneath. The relaxed shirt was tucked into sparkling black high-waisted boyshorts covered in glittering embellishment.

Black suspenders attached to the sequined shorts added a distinctly vintage touch, while sheer black tights extended the look into a pair of black heels. A small black beret completed the outfit, giving Carpenter an unmistakable nod to Madonna's iconic styling.

The outfit was styled by Jared Ellner, with Carpenter finishing the look with custom Christian Louboutin Mary Janes. The shoes added a polished feminine touch to the otherwise playful stage costume.

Her blonde hair was styled in soft, voluminous curls, spilling out from beneath the beret and framing her face. She paired the hairstyle with defined eyes, rosy cheeks and a glossy, natural-toned lip.

The whole look felt like a deliberate tribute to Madonna, particularly with the suspenders and beret recalling some of the pop icon's early to mid 80s fashion imagery. Carpenter has already established a habit of paying homage to Madonna through her VMAs fashion, making this performance another fun chapter in that connection.
