Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan in the Expectations remix video

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have a game show to run, and they dressed for it. The “Expectations” remix video dropped this week, and it’s nothing like a normal music video. The “Drivers License” singer and the “Good Luck Babe” star play rival contestants on a fake TV quiz called The Big Expectations Show. David Byrne hosts. Yes, really.

It’s a first for both of them. The remix is Olivia’s first ever, and it’s Chappell’s first time as a guest on someone else’s track. Dan Nigro, Olivia’s longtime producer, worked on it. The song is the angry, post-breakup one from her latest album, and the remix adds a new verse from Chappell. It’s about being ghosted by a typical L.A. girl, so the whole thing gets a queer, funny twist.

Now the clothes. Olivia plays three contestants, which means three outfits behind three podiums. One is a leather-clad bad girl with long black gloves. One is a black-and-white checkered strapless dress worn with bright red tights. The third is pale pink and prim, with a belted waist and white cat-eye sunglasses. It’s a sweet, silly joke about being three different people at once.

Later she changes into a polka-dot bra top with puffy black sleeves and a trim of green feathers. Her biggest look is the pageant gown. It’s a pink plaid mermaid dress, ruched and puffed at the skirt, with a black bodice on top. It comes from Ava Presley, and it’s deliberately a bit over the top. It’s the kind of dress you’d expect on a game show assistant in a TV rerun.

Chappell leads the opposing team, The Roans, and she goes even bigger. In one scene she wears a red tartan corset top over matching plaid trousers, with a ruffle of black tulle at the hips and chunky black platform shoes. A small black hat with a red bow sits on top of her red-orange curls. Her other looks include a mint-green skirt suit with black gloves and silver heels, and a leopard-print jacket lined with red feathers. Drag queen Aquaria turns up on her team in a pink skirt suit.

Together, the two of them wear matching energy. In one shot Olivia is in a sparkly black bustier and a big white tulle skirt with a white bow in her hair. Chappell stands next to her in all that plaid. They’re posing on a yellow convertible with a plate that reads “XPECT8NS.”

It’s a loud, colourful tribute to retro TV and big music video moments. Think supersized bows, tutus worn at odd angles, feather boas and hot pink berets. Fans of 80s fashion will spot the references straight away. The video is also a nod to older pop stars. W Magazine points to Pat Benatar, Toni Basil, early Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna’s Boy Toy era.

It also fits Olivia’s usual style. She built her name on a messy, pop-punk mood, and the leather, plaid and smudged eyeliner come straight out of the grunge aesthetic. Here she just turns it up to full volume.

Olivia’s stylists are sisters Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, and Chappell’s is Briana Andalore. Between them they’ve made one of the most fun fashion videos of the year, and the song’s message, about not settling for less, fits the costumes.
