Getting dressed up for a night of fun and
leisure, whether heading out with friends, attending a formal dinner or simply
going on a date night with your partner, can be an exciting opportunity. Finding
a nice outfit that compliments your body shape and doing your make up in a
sophisticated way, not to mention choosing some interesting shoes, do you go
for comfort or a pair that shows off your legs?
Choosing accessories to compliment your look can sometimes be overwhelming with
the different options, do you choose a long necklace? Add some shimmery
bangles? Or stick with some simple earrings. To offer some advice, we’ve put
together a guide to help you reach for the right accessories for your night of
frivolities.
Consider
Your Body Shape
Your body shape will affect
the weight of the accessories you choose.
If you have a petite body shape, stick to small accessories, avoiding chunky
rings or bracelets and picking necklaces with smaller, less obvious pendants. If
you have a larger frame or are quite tall, you have more freedom to choose
larger, bulkier pieces of jewelry to wear.
Avoid
Large, Matching Jewelry Sets
Matching jewelry creates a very formal,
mature look and may be out of place with a modern formal outfit or casual
appearance. When wearing a matching jewelry set, stick to smaller, more
sophisticated pieces rather than outspoken, bright and big sets, they can
absorb the rest of your outfit, becoming distracting and subtracting from your
overall look.
Choosing
a Necklace Length
When choosing to wear a necklace, consider
the focal point of your outfit first, are your eyes immediately drawn to your
neckline, your waist or your head? If you are drawn to the neckline, stick to a
very small, dainty necklace that sits on or just above your collarbone. Should
your focal point draw attention to your waist or face, a longer necklace will
compliment your outfit nicely, although keep pendants minimal unless you want
to draw attention to that area.
Co-ordinate
Your Metals
Should your outfit have any metal on,
buttons, zips, poppers, etc, consider coordinating
your jewelry metals to that of your clothing. Wearing a silver charm bracelet
or a platinum bracelet works nicely with typical silver and grey fasteners. Alternatively,
if you are co-ordinating gold accessories, consider the different shades of gold available, bright-yellow golds may not co-ordinate as
nicely to duller, plated gold highlights in your outfit. When sporting an
outfit with no metal tags or fastenings,
you have more freedom in your accessories, although make sure they coordinate between each other, pairing neutral
tones with silvers and soft colors with shades of gold for example.
Let
Your Accessories Do the Talking
Wearing a fairly plain outfit in darker,
neutral shades, like white, black and tones of grey? Let your accessories shine
through your personality and wear something with color for a nice pop of
vividness to your appearance. Silver has always been a popular option and
titanium and platinum boast the preferred white-silver tones while offering a
bit more luxury.
Choosing
Men’s Accessories
While men aren’t as likely to choose to
accessorize their look, men’s jewelry is becoming more popular and the
classic, useful accessories like cufflinks, watches and tie
pins are making a resurgence, especially for formal outfits. Suits
tend to offer fewer color variations
than the typical women’s wardrobe options so matching menswear accessories can
be a simpler affair. Choose to coordinate
metals and styles for a formal occasion or black-tie event, for instance,
matching cufflinks with shirt buttons and tie slides. A glimpse of personality
can shine through in accessories like bracelets, lapel pins and contemporary
cufflinks, which offer plenty of unique options for dressing up your
appearance.
