Taking care of your skin is a year-round process, no matter which season it is. However, your skin needs a different skincare routine during the middle of the winter than in the summertime. Once the air starts getting colder, the body begins to narrow down blood vessels in order to retain heat. The outer layers of the skin then become dull and dry, making the skin prone to cracks and flakes.

1. Moisturize more often.
The same way your body needs enough hydration, your skin needs proper hydrating too, regardless of the season. During winter, the cold weather, low humidity, and rough winds may tend to make your skin drier and affect its texture. This is why it’s best to moisturize your skin with richer moisturizers and heavier formulas as much as possible during the wintertime.

Natural soap is an alternative to commercial soaps. Unlike commercial soaps, natural soaps don't contain harmful chemicals and strong fragrances that can damage your skin. If your skin is prone to flaking, using standard liquid foundations in cold months will make things worse for you as liquid foundation can highlight the skin issue. Mineral-based natural makeup looks better on flaky skin, as it skims over flakes and blends them with your skin. There’s no need to worry about mineral powder drying out your skin as long as you’re using a good moisturizer underneath.

Even though you’re not spending your days at the beach and trying to get a nice tan, that doesn’t mean you should stop using sunscreen altogether. It’s true that most moisturizers, primers, and foundations have some sun protection factor, however, the sun can be as damaging in the winter as much as it is in the summer. Using your sunscreen daily also has the added benefit of delaying the aging process of your skin.

Skin cells dehydrate and dry out faster in winter. Dry winter skin requires exfoliation, but not as frequently as in the summer. You need to clear away the dead cells to make way for new ones. Consider reducing the number of times you exfoliate your skin to once or twice a week. Make sure to use gentle exfoliators and be careful not to over-exfoliate.

With the winter season, the presence of chapped lips tends to increase, especially during harsh winds. To prevent lip dryness, regularly apply a hydrating balm that contains natural oils like almond, wheat germ, coconut, jojoba, sunflower, cottonseed, or calendula oil. Aloe vera and shea butter may also prove to be helpful. Furthermore, you should consider using a lip exfoliator a couple of times a week to clear out any dead skin.

Just because most antioxidant products say ‘anti-aging’ on their packaging doesn’t mean they’re exclusive for older skin. Antioxidant serums can help put out inflammations as well as provide an extra layer of hydration and protection. Look out for a serum packed with essential oils and apply it between your moisturizer and toner twice a day.
